The Raincoats - Odyshape

  • £21.99

The Raincoat's second album, released in 1981, stretched the scope of punk to brilliant experimental proportions. Building on the perfect promise of their 1979 debut, the songs are as tensely charged and fully-formed, but the band's song-writing opened up to reveal unexpected textures and instrumentation. The typical band set-up is skilfully reconstructed and invented anew; the drums, much more than keeping a beat, add tones of percussive insistence, and far from making up the rhythm section, the bass is there to lead the melody, which the violin, and various other instruments, dance around enigmatically. Meanwhile the guitar sharply weaves everything together before cutting it all up again,

Ana and Gina's vocals are unmistakable, poetic and impassioned, and are, more than anything else, what binds the Raincoats' sound between this and the first album. Odyshape may be an album that challenges expectations (as much now as forty year ago), but far from being a challenging listen, is a perfectly executed experimental pop album, albeit one that is hard to dance to...

Originally released on Rough Trade Records, this reissue on the band's own We ThRee label has been re-mastered from the original tapes.

"It was The Raincoats I related to most. They seemed like ordinary people playing extraordinary music. Music that was natural that made room for cohesion of personalities. They had enough confidence to be vulnerable and to be themselves without having to take on the mantle of male rock/punk rock aggression… or the typical female as sex symbol avec irony or sensationalism" - Kim Gordon, Sonic Youth, 1993
