Grouper - Shade

KRANKY

  • $21.00

Shade is twelfth full-length album by Grouper, the solo project of Portland, Oregon's electro-acoustic ambient/noise musician Liz Harris, and is a collection of songs that span fifteen years, with portions recorded on Mount Tamalpais in Northern California during a self-made residency, while other pieces made earlier than that in Portland. The rest of the album was recorded recently in Astoria, Oregon.

The songs touch on loss, flaws, hiding places, and love. Harris characterises Shade as an album about respite, and the coast, poetically and literally; how we frame ourselves in a landscape, how in turn it frames us, with memories and experiences mapping our connection to a place.

The album feels deeply routed to the Bay Area, and the North West Coast of the United States, with the landscape's unique moods of solitude, beauty, and isolation.  Throughout, Harris threads a hidden radiant language of voice, disquiet, and guitar, framed by open space and the sense of being far away; the album itself like a lighthouse, "burying the faults of being human into things that we project upon the sky at night."
