Ghost Bag - Palindrome

  • £19.99

Ghost Bag is the recording alias of Nick Jongen. Born in the Netherlands in 1991 & currently residing in Berlin, Germany. Written and recorded in Salvador da Bahia, Brazil during an artist residency at Goethe Institute in January and February of 2019, Palindrome is his second release under the moniker Ghost Bag, following the excellent 2018 debut, Ghost Bag & Tine Fetz, an audiovisual collaboration with illustrator Tine Fetz.

Tine Fetz again contributes illustrations for this record, as well as occasional backing vocals, but the writing of Palindrome was undoubtedly a solo effort. On this self-recorded documentation of his travels, Jongen reflects on the past and the present, and worries about his future. Haunting vocal harmonies glide effortlessly over a lo-fi guitar and lush, reverby synth tones, but something ominous, heartbreaking and fatalistic seems always to lie not far beneath the surface of these beautiful songs.

Despite the option to use an in-house theatre space, this record was made almost entirely in the bedroom with just two mics and a small synthesizer brought from home, plus a worn out acoustic guitar purchased on site. Most days of his two-month stay were routinely spent writing, and feeding monkeys from the kitchen window during breaks.

“Making this record was existential, painful, and existentially painful," says Jongen. "Upon returning to Europe it went on to haunt me for over a year. Now, I’ve seemingly come to terms with it, making it available to everyone that’s willing to listen.” Luckily, it's far from a painful record to listen to. In fact it's something of a gem that shimmers with melody, beauty, and a classic pop sensibility.
