Bill Callahan - Gold Record

  • £22.99

Following a five-year wait for his previous album, 2019's Shepherd In A Sheepskin Vest, Bill Callahan's (formally Smog) new album, Gold Record, took just over a year to be written, recorded and released.

Callahan's velvet-burnt vocals ride high over his beautifully simple take on Americana, that includes subtle woodwind, brass and synth interjections, weaving stories out quiet moments and the lives of passers-by. The instrumentation leaves a lot of room for the songs to breath, and lives to be lived out. The affection Callahan feels for the character's in his songs is palpably first-person, and voiced with a love of detail and tenderness of memory.

Always steering his songs wilfully through awkward weather and dark woods, these bitter-sweet tales are a road-trip across a country waiting to reveal itself in all its candid melancholy to anyone willing to stop and listen. And it's as engrossing as a book of Raymond Carver short-stories.
