A key figure in the New York no wave movement, James Chance began combining improvisational jazz and punk in the late '70s, in such bands as Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, and James Chance and the Contortions. Following the break-up of the Contortions in 1979, Chance formed James White and the Blacks, releasing three albums, the last of which, 1986's Melt Yourself Down, which combined James Brown covers with James White originals, only receiving a very limited Japanese pressing, until now.

Sublime skronk, incendiary funk, and jittery free-jazz make this one of the great 'lost' albums of the inventive downtown post-punk scene.
