Joanna Sternberg is a songwriter of such tender brilliance and emotional honesty that their understated debut album, Then I Try Some More, has developed a cult following since it's release in 2019 on Team Love Records. Now available more widely through Fat Possum Records, it is time for it to become your new favourite record.

There is an unfussed olde-timey quality to these songs, performed solo on piano and  acoustic guitar (they were composed as piano rags, inspired by Scott Joplin, then slowed down, lyrics added, and the melodies changed to what they are now); New York-born Sternberg began writing songs at a young age, and retains this natural simplicity to her personal - and often heartbreaking - songs; but that simplicity is also what makes their appeal so universal. And that genius for connectivity, melody, and unaffected delivery is a quality Sternberg shares with artists such as Daniel Johnston, Kath Bloom, Kimya Dawson and Elliott Smith (comparisons that we don't make lightly).

The songs on Then I Try Some More deal with addiction, depression, unrequited love, loneliness and gender identity (or the lack of it). But if the album sounds melancholy, it is also genuinely uplifting; if it seems inward-looking, it is also immensely relatable. In short, this is one of the most perfect and uncategoriseable albums of our time; each song one of endearing beauty, underplayed joy and the humble charm.
